Virtualisation

Virtualisation is a growing trend within many organisations here in Australia both small and large.

What is virtualisation?

Virtualisation is where operating systems and applications are emulated in a virtual environment, meaning they are not installed to a specific physical device.  Virtualisation is not only for servers, but is becoming very popular at the desktop and application levels too.  When software is virtualised, you have the abilitly to run multiple operating systems and applications on a single physical resource.

Why would I implement virtualisation in my environment?

There are several advantages to having a virtual environment, these include:

  • Server consolidation (for example you can run several operating systems on one physical server, so you get the maximum use from your hardware)
  • Easier software back-up and disaster recovery
  • Hosting legacy applications - these are applicatons that need to run on older operating systems for example
  • Reducing testing and development costs - you can test new applications or patches quickly and easily without investing in extra hardware
  • Better business continuity - a virtual environment can help protect you from downtime, scheduled or non-scheduled
  • Being greener - fewer physical devices means a smaller carbon footprint
